The Coalition of CSOs in Youth Development in the Northern Region (CCDNR) has called for the immediate inauguration of the board for the National Youth Authority (NYA) to facilitate the implementation of the new NYA Act (Act 939).

This, according to CCDNR, would help mitigate the many challenges confronting the youth of the country.

In a statement issued by CCDNR to commemorate the celebration of the Africa Youth Day, the group appealed to president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the “immediate Inauguration of the National Youth Authority Board. This will trigger the implementation of the Act and awaken youth development across the length and breadth of the country using the various structures.”

The group also called for the drafting and adoption of the Legislative Instrument (LI) for the new Act in order to accelerate the functionality of the board and also instigate development initiatives.

November 1every year is marked as Africa Youth Day in recognition of the youth as key agents for socio-political change and economic growth in all aspects of the African society.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investment in the Youth”.

PRESS RELEASE

INAUGURATION OF NYA BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS CRUCIAL TO HARNESSING DEMOGRAPHIC DIVIDEND OF GHANAIAN YOUTH

The Africa Youth Day (AYD) is celebrated to mark yet another important milestone in the struggle to seek recognition of the youth as key agents for socio-political change and economic growth in all aspects of the African society.

The day, which takes place every November 1, was proclaimed and instituted in 2006, to ensure that African youth continue to strive for ownership in Africa’s development. It therefore presents an opportunity and platform to highlight the issues, roles and challenges of the African youth.

The AU crafted this year’s theme “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investment in the Youth”, to further highlight the importance of young people as the main contributors for a sustainable development of the African continent through their energy, motivation, and idealism.

It is however important to state that, young persons’ contribution and participation towards the goal of harnessing the demographic dividend by any African country largely depends on the effective and functional institutions put in place by the government.

It is against this background that delay of the INAUGURATION OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH AUTHORITY BOARD is an issue of great concern to the Coalition of CSOs in Youth Development in the Northern Region (CCDNR). Members of the Coalition include Youth Empowerment for Life (YEfL), Centre for Active Learning and Development, Youth Network for Sustainable Development, Youth Alive, Youth Opportunity Partnership Project, NORSAAC, Centre for Development and Policy Advocacy, and Empowering and Transforming Communities.

Our concern is anchored on the fact that NYA is currently operating under a New Act (Act 939) and a functional Board is urgently needed to implement the Act by taking the needed decisions/steps to immediately reverse challenges confronting the youth of Ghana. Based on the above, CCDNR brings the following for the immediate attention of office of President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo:

Immediate Inauguration of the National Youth Authority Board

This will trigger the implementation of the Act and awaken youth development across the length and breadth of the country using the various structures

Call for the drafting and Adoption the Legislative Instrument (LI) for the new Act. This is critical to accelerate the functionality of the board as well as instigate development initiatives that will go a long way to benefit the Ghanaian youth most especially the vulnerable youth.

We are of the considered view that vulnerable youth of Ghana will not fulfil their aspirations without full implementation of the NYA Act as well as adoption of the LI.

We have confidence in your leadership and believe that speedy inauguration of the NYA Board will add impetus to fulfilling the great dreams you have for the youth of Ghana and also satisfy international statutory requirements.

The coalition has sent a letter to the Office of the President to that effect and we are hopeful that as a listening father, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo will swiftly act on our request.

Long live Ghanaian Youth!

Long live Ghana!!

Long live Africa!!!

Signed.

Vera Jawol Magan

Acting Convener of CCDNR
