FA, PLB to decide on league

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to engage the Premier League Board (PLB) in an emergency meeting to decide on a new date for the commencement of the Premier League.

The meeting, scheduled for next week, is expected to, among other things, discuss the delay in the commencement of the league and whether the league could be completed before the World Cup in June.

However, a source close to the PLB told the Daily Graphic that three different dates had been proposed which would be tabled before the football governing body to settle on one.

“But whatever the situation may be, the league is expected to start in the second month of next year but the PLB would be meeting with the FA next week to submit its proposal.

“The PLB will present three different dates to the FA for them to select one and, whichever date the FA picks, would be when the league would start”, the source noted.

Unfortunately, the source stated that there was no way the league could be completed before the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup but they were expected to deliberate with the FA on what to do when the Mundial starts.

The late start means the league could go beyond next June when the World Cup is due to start, a situation which would breach FIFA’s directive demanding all competitions to end before kick-off of the competition.

As a result, the FA would have no option than to suspend the league until after the World Cup.

Litigation has drawn back the commencement of Ghana’s elite league after it was synchronised with the European calendar two seasons ago.
